A Tol celebration is the child's 1st birthday. Koreans families celebrate a child's first 90 days of life and then their first year of life. The first birthday was considered significant due to the high infant mortality rate in Korea for many years. Certain foods are eaten and a ceremony is conducted where items are laid out in front of the child and the order in which he touches them signifies certain things. (Spool of Thread = Long life, Pen = Scholar, etc.) Children usually wear their Hanbok, a traditional Korean outfit. It was a very special day for us and a great way to honor Ryan's heritage!
